If you're an actor between principal roles, supporting artist work can be a great way to make some extra money while staying within the industry. Day rates vary depending on the production and what's required of you. Physical awareness, the ability to take direction, emotional control: these are things a trained actor brings to background work that others simply don't have. If you also have skills like stage combat, dance, a musical instrument or a second language, you may be even more desirable to casting agents looking to fill specific background roles.

Being professional, prepared and easy to work with gets noticed. Background work puts you in front of the ADs, directors and casting directors working across the UK's biggest productions, and it's not unheard of for actors to be upgraded from supporting artist to a featured or speaking role because someone on set saw something in them.
